Yahoo to close its music store

In yet another glaring setback for proponents of Digital Rights Management (DRM), Yahoo has emailed customers of its Yahoo Music Store mid-week to tell them that it will be closing for good. The worst of thing? Yahoo will be taking down its DRM license key servers come end-September 2008. The result is that downloaded tracks can no longer be played on new computers beyond the five computers already authorized to play the tunes. Already, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has issued a call for refunds to be made for the lost music. Indeed, the backlash when Microsoft closed down its MSN Music Store a few months ago prompted the Redmond company to backtrack and allow access to its DRM'ed music until the end of 2011.
